Reporting on carbon emissions is rapidly becoming expected, even required, of businesses and organisations, here in NZ and around the world. Social services, churches and other charities will not be exempt. We all need to play our part if, as a nation and as a world, we are to achieve the vital goal of stopping global warming. Measuring EmissionsRecording and reporting carbon emissions is a central component to environmental planning. Know your carbon footprint!
Tools available in NZ include: a) Ekos Ekos is a kiwi company providing low-cost and free carbon calculation, great for social service agencies and small businesses. Ekos also provides carbon offsets through forest projects around the Pacific. b) Toitu Carbon Assess, an easy to use and easily comparable tool costing $30 per month: c) The Guide and Interactive Workbook provided free by the Ministry for the Environment (MFE) |
Fuel Savings
There are ways to promote fuel efficiency in your organisation:
- Driver education
- Monitor speeds
If your organisation purchases, leases or rents vehicles, how will you transition towards hybrid and electric vehicles?
(i.e. you might need a Vehicle Procurement Policy)

Travel Policy
How will people in your organisation decide whether to travel for a work meeting?
Will you hold conferences?
How will you provide training?
A Travel Policy sets some guidelines for decision making which give practical expression to your carbon reduction goals.

Energy Efficiency
Saving on your power bill is what's called a "cost positive" aspect of sustainability planning.
The NZ Govt organisation promoting energy efficiency is EECA: Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority. They have plenty of resources and online tools about energy consumption, including The Energy Management Journey Tool.
Once you have a clearer idea of what power you are using across your organisation, you can set policy and an action plan to reduce your electricity use.

Get your own house in order: comment by Kate, Westpac
Carbon Zero Webinar, Christchurch Employers Chamber of Commerce.
Starting with your own organisational footprint is the most important thing, because it means you know what you are talking about: you've done it yourself. You increase your own understanding and knowledge, which then increases your knowledge for customers. Unless we know our own carbon footprint and have our own house in order, we can't do anything about the wider issues. As a financial institution we have to be very aware of risk, and we are very concerned about sea level rise and coastal erosion. But unless we have done this piece - measuring our own carbon emissions - to start with, we don't have anything to stand on to talk about it.
Pip, Orion
Orion did our first Climate Risks and Opportunities Report last year, and that has lead to a lot of excellent conversations with people. But we could not have done that unless we first had to put our own house in order, to get a sense of what our emissions look like and what our risks are. From there, the sky's the limit in terms of what you can achieve: 'who's keen to talk?'! The viral change starts small and gets big. Do it, understand it, and then engage with the wider conversations about it.
